Press Release.

SCMA provides leadership to a global ecumenical students body

Michael Wallace

A leader of SCM Aotearoa, Michael Wallace, has been appointed to head the World's largest student organisation, the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF).

Michael (34) (Convenor of the Student Christian Movement National Co-ordinating Group) was appointed Secretary General of the federation by its 33rd General Assembly in Thailand this August.

The General Assembly meets every four years and is the highest decision making body of the ecumenical federation.

Founded in 1895, the WSCF comprises 98 national Student Christian Movements (SCMs) from the federation's six regions: Africa, Europe, South America, North America, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

The WSCF includes students from Protestant, Orthodox, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Pentecostal traditions and aims to be a prophetic witness in church and society. The vision affirmed by 175 delegates at August's assembly was:

" To empower students in critical thinking and constructive transformation of our world by being a space for prayer and celebration, theological reflection, societal analysis, solidarity and action. "

Michael brings fifteen years of ecumenical experience to the role. His strengths in movement building and facilitation will be key to the task of leading the federation over the next four years.

Formerly staff and Asia-Pacific representative for SCM Aotearoa, Mr Wallace currently works as Youth Co-ordinator for Christian World Service. He represents the Anglican Church on the CCANZ executive.

Present at the Assembly were two more SCMers from Aotearoa. The Rev’d Paddy Noble of Tairawhiti who currently works for Cambodian SCM was there as a steward and Michael Perkins of Wellington was elected Asia-Pacific representative on the international WSCF executive.

SCM Aotearoa National Secretary Mandla-Akhe Dube says Michael Wallace's appointment will bring the sense of SCM global community much closer to home:

"We are elated that Michael with his ecumenical vision and Pacific perspective has taken up the leadership of WSCF at the highest level. This is cause for celebration for the whole oikuemene in Aotearoa New Zealand."

SCMA affiliated to WSCF in 1896 and has since then produced and nurtured many leaders in New Zealand politics, academia and the church.

Vibrant and dynamic units exist at Otago, Canterbury, Victoria and Auckland universities.

SCM in Aotearoa New Zealand sets out to be inclusive, open, radical, ecumenical and challenging:

‘SCM seeks to bring together students of all denominations and none, to explore the Christian faith in an open-minded and non-judgemental environment.’
