The Newsletter of the Student Christian Movement of AotearoaFebruary 1998No 31-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIENTATION Local SCM Groups have been involved in Clubs and Societies days at each university campus where we have a presence. Brand new pamphlets have been put together: a general one about SCMA by the Movement Animators Mary McLaughlin and Jemma All en, and one by Andrew Coyle and Quentin Duthie about their work as the Tauiwi Coordinators. Thank you for the hard work! A variety of pamphlets and posters were sent to each unit from the National Office. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCM VICTORIA Things are going pretty well for SCM Vic. so far. They will be making piklets with jam and cream for koha at the clubs and socs table, and are having a beer and pizza night as our first meeting! Angela Emmett has met with the other Christi an groups on campus, and have organised a couple of joint worship times with them. They plan on joining with the other groups once a term, and generally making them aware of what each other is doing. Then interested people can attend other groups events . SCM Victoria will also be visiting the Film Censor, and will hopefully get Mike Smith to come and speak to us. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKSALES SCM is once again running second hand book sales as fund-raising events at Otago and Canterbury University. The Otago one was at the beginning of March, and the Canterbury one is from the 16th to 24th of March. Its lots of hard work, but grea t for visibility and fundraising. Thank you to everyone involved! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNIVERSAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR STUDENTS Material has been sent to units and is suitable for use at any time, if you missed the day in February. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHRISTIANS CONCERNED FOR BURMA Thanks to contacts made by Quentin in Thailand, we have been sent the "Pray for Burma" material. It is a good chance to learn some more about people's lives in this oppressed country. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEB SITE STATISTICS There have been 186 file requests for the SCMA homepage, and 2113 file requests overall. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FUNDING Applications need to be made in the next two months for the Ecumenical Assistance Programme and the Movement Animator Programme, both funding programmes of the World Student Christian Federation which SCMA is eligible to apply for. So discuss in your Local SCM Group what your dreams for the next year are, and what project you may have some energy for, and make sure your National Coordinating Group Representative is on board and can bring the ideas to the NCG meeting on the 22nd or 29th of March. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ URGENT $ Please ensure any claims for expenditure are in by the end of March, to the SCMA Treasurer, Quentin Duthie, Newman Hall, 16 Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland/Tamaki-makau-rau 1001. Also advise of any expenditure that will take place before 31 March . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCM JAPAN Michael Wallace writes that he and Julanne are going to attend the National Conference. More in later issues of SCM Update. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LACHLAN MACDOWALL Has resigned from the position of National Secretary of Australian SCM. He found his time in Aotearoa good for reflection and conversation, and decided that continuing in the position would not be particularly life-giving for him. He wants to have time to "move gently" for a while, rather than having the energy for the demands of being National Secretary. He emphasises that he is resigning from the position, and not from SCM. Many people from SCM Aotearoa will wish him well in the n ext stage of life, and also hope that ASCM finds someone with the skills to move into the position he vacates. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAVID BRYANT (previous SCM Canterbury) sends warm greetings from chilly Montreal, Canada (he's on a 12 month postdoc position). After surviving the Montreal Ice Storm and winter temperatures of below -25C, he's happy to say that its now a balmy 0 degrees. What's more, the Montreal SCM is starting up once more after a year or two hibernation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAS THE NATIONAL OFFICE GOT YOUR ADDRESS AND EMAIL FOR THIS YEAR? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECENT ARRIVALS AT THE OFFICE |
