We hope that each SCM unit will have some funds raised to help with the cost of travel, and remember that the national movement has a budget for subsidy too. CONFERENCE LOCATION CHANGED Due to the sudden resignation of the conference coordinator, and the inability of the local group to take on the task, the SCMA National Conference will no longer be in Auckland. It is now being organised by a national working group made up of Mary McLaughlin, Emmeline Taptiklis, Sonia Petrie and Kiersten Larsen. As you can see above, there will be many exciting workshops, other activities, and SCM worship then the AGM, which will be a great place for all SCMers to find out what has been happening around the country, and the world as our people participated in all sorts of events. It will also be the time to strategise for next year - so if you want to be a part of the action, and have a say about the next year of SCM, then BE THERE!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------

ANNUAL REPORTS We are looking forward to the brief annual reports of everyone who has done a job for the national movement, to be posted to the office to arrive by the 6th June. Please be ready to give a short creative presentation of your experience to the National Conference.

GOD SPEED THE YEAR OF JUBILEE!: The biblical vision of Sabbath economics. By Ched Myers The Bible recognises that inequalities will inevitably arise in "fallen" society-a realism it shares with the world view of modern capitalism. Unlike the social Darwinism of the latter, however, the biblical vision refuses to stipulate that injustice is therefore a permanent condition. Instead, God's people are instructed to dismantle, on a regular basis, the fundamental patterns and structures of stratified wealth and power, so that there is "enough for everyone." This socio-economic vision is articulated in a variety of ways in both testaments: through Exodus storytelling (Exodus 16), Levitical legislation (Leviticus 25), Deuteronomic exhortation (Deuteronomy 15), prophetic pronouncement (Isaiah 5), gospel parable (Matthew 25), and apostolic pleading (2 Corinthians 8-9). This article will examine the Hebrew Bible roots of this tradition; the sequel will look at how Jesus appropriates and renews it There's a taste of this essay see the whole thing at: http://sojourners.com/soj9805/980520.html

JUBILEE 2000 The campaign is hotting up around the world to have third world debt cancelled. Debt is the biggest reason for poverty of millions of people around the world, and Structural Adjustment Programmes have been imposed on many countries by the International Monetary Fund. Even the Chief Economist of the World Bank is now questioning such a strategy. Check out the web pages on www.jubilee2000uk.org or the articles run by the British Guardian Newspaper on www.reports.guardian.co.uk/debt The petition of the Christian World Service to encourage our government to support Jubilee 2000 is being presented to parliament on the 17th of June, so write in support to your MP, and look out for it in the press!

THE SCM WELLINGTON MEN'S CAUCUS... did actually have a topic at the same time as the woman's one. It was on "Supportive Relationship -- What is it?" since at this time of year a lot of people tend to suffer "burn-out." So they had a discussion looking more in depth at the different levels there are in specific relationships that they have - what the relationships give to the men and conversely, what the men bring to them. It was nitty-gritty sensitive stuff and the experience of carefully sharing with each other was revealing nurturing and reconciling for all the guys there. Great work by the local Men's Coordinator Antonin Moore!

RESTORE THE LAND Video and a series of four studies from Christian World Service and the CCANZ Programme to Combat Racism. Studies cover: The meaning of land, Environmental destruction and restoration, Colinization and decolonization,(sic) Uprooted peoples - people returning home. These look like really well put together studies, on topics which are high on the priorities of SCM, so try and attend them if your group is using them!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------

MOVEMENT ANIMATOR PROGRAMME FUNDING Thanks to some hard work put in by Amanda Clarke and Kiersten Larsen on the application, SCM Aotearoa has been granted US$800 towards the Summer Theology Conference which SCMA running in conjunction with CCANZ as a part of the vision of the CWP consultation, where SCMers from each SCM unit put together a vision for future co-operation.

NEW INTERIM TREASURER OF SCMA Arana Casey is the new interim treasurer of SCMA until the end of the AGM. Contact her through the National Office or ph 03-3587724 about reimbursements or other matters. The change is made necessary by the resignation of the previous treasurer Quentin Duthie. Any SCM cheques held must be presented immediately.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------

DONATIONS As the AGM comes up again, SCMA is very aware that it does not have enough regular income to sustain the movement. This is a constant source of difficulty and conflict. Any donations, however small, will help the situation, and it would be great to have some sure funds before the AGM meets. Two junior Senior Friends have just donated $1300 towards the wages of the National Administrator, for which we are very grateful. Any general donations, or tagged donations for this purpose, or for the National Conference, or to assist participation in international WSCF conferences can be sent to the National Office at the address below.
